E-Textiles Network Workshop: E-Textiles for PPE and Workwear
On 11th September 2024, the E-Textiles Network hosted a vibrant workshop at the Benzie Building, Manchester Metropolitan University, focused on the integration of wearable technology into Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and workwear. The event gathered leading industry professionals, academics, and innovators to explore how e-textiles can enhance PPE, while addressing key research challenges in this rapidly evolving field.
The workshop began with a warm welcome from Professor Steve Beeby of the University of Southampton, setting the stage for an insightful day of discussion. Key speakers presented talks on a variety of topics, each offering unique perspectives and valuable insights:
- Paul Chivers (former Head of PPE Reuse, Innovation and Sustainability in DHSC) “Is NHS PPE – fit for the 21st Century?”
- Dr Anthony Wilson (Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust) “The role of wearable vital signs monitoring to improve the care of patients”
- Prof. Ningtao Mao (University of Leeds) “Challenges in engineering PPE for performance“
- Dr Theodore Hughes-Riley (Nottingham Trent University) “Vibration sensing textiles for personal protective applications “
The day concluded with a second facilitated workshop, where participants grouped together to define collaborative project proposals based on the ideas generated during the morning session. The event wrapped up with a summary of next steps and an opportunity for further networking over tea and coffee.
This workshop provided a valuable platform for networking and knowledge sharing, bringing fresh ideas and new partnerships to the forefront of e-textile research in PPE and workwear.
Stay tuned for more updates and upcoming events from the E-Textiles Network!
